Pickering has got the balance of traditional market town, industry and commerce, history, and culture, down to a fine art.
It’s a small town which means a ready-made community atmosphere for your new home. It’s between Scarborough on the coast and Thirsk in the centre of Yorkshire. It’s on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. With plenty of visitors to add their support to its local businesses, Pickering is a colourful town with a ready-made work-life balance too.
Whatever your stage of life, whether you are working or retired, starting a family or setting up on your own, Pickering is a super place to call home.
The independent shops, markets, cafés, and restaurants are a local asset, as well as bringing visitors into the town. You’ve got the usual national supermarkets as well, but they complement rather than compete, which is a success story for the town. There are three theatres and a long list of societies and clubs, which is a sure sign of an energetic social life. There’s a swimming pool and leisure centre, a medical centre, and a supportive business community.
Going to school
Children get a great start to their school years here, with Pickering Community Infant and Nursery School, St Joseph’s RC Primary School and Pickering Community Junior School. Lady Lumley’s is the town’s secondary school.
Out and about
The A170 is Pickering’s main road. It runs east to west, connecting Scarborough on the coast with Thirsk and the A1(M) in the centre of Yorkshire. It takes about an hour to reach the motorway by car and a bit less to drive to Scarborough. You can drive to York in about an hour too, by joining the A64 to the south of Pickering. Pickering train station is on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway network. Leeds Bradford Airport is your nearest international airport for flights. It takes about an hour and a half to drive there.
Head for the hills
You’ll have the incredible landscapes of the North York Moors National Park on your doorstep, with moor, coast, forest, and dale to explore. It’s a wonderful place for hiking and biking.
