Living in Ripon

Great facilities

Ripon’s size means it’s quick and easy to get around so you can benefit from all it has to offer. There’s a great range of shops, with plenty of independent boutiques and businesses to browse and enjoy. But, you’ll also be well-served by useful national chains, including opticians, pharmacies and a good range of banks. Supermarkets include M&S, Aldi and Sainsbury’s, as well as Booth’s, a high-end grocery store that’s an institution in the city with a great range of produce and a cafe.

The city also benefits from a community hospital that provides care for the local community and has a well-regarded minor injuries unit. To help you stay in tip-top health, the Jack Laugher Leisure and Wellness Centre has a state-of-the-art gym, a 25-metre pool and a sauna and steam room. In addition, you can find gyms, spas, health clubs and plenty of sports clubs, including rugby, tennis and cricket.

Outstanding schools

If you’re moving with children, there’s a good choice of great schools. St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary School, Outwood Academy Ripon are rated as Outstanding by Ofsted. There’s also a grammar school in the city and a range of choices for your children’s education from nursery to college. For university, you won’t be far from Leeds or York, which both offer great choices for further education.

A beautiful location

Ripon is surrounded by stunning natural spaces, but you don’t even need to leave the city to discover beautiful surroundings. The impressive cathedral is just on the edge of the city’s mix of narrow streets, squares and period buildings. It’s a beautiful place to explore, and with a river, canal, wetlands, a choice of parks within the city, and even a racecourse to explore, you don’t have to go far to enjoy nature.

Just a few minutes south of the town is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Studley Royal Park and Fountains Abbey. These incredible abbey ruins and stunning water gardens are a must-visit from your home. On either side of Ripon are National Parks and National Landscapes. It’s just a short journey to the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and the Howardian Hills and Nidderdale National Landscapes. Each of these offers stunning surroundings and plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling - perfect for days out with the children or the dogs.
