Betty swaps supermarket shelves for building site
09 March 2022

Betty Lee, a 45-year-old mother-of-three, was working nights in her local supermarket when she decided to follow her dream and enter the construction industry.
Now Betty is progressing with a Foundation Apprenticeship in Carpentry with Persimmon Homes – and she’s loving every second.
Speaking as part of International Women’s Day 2022, Betty, from Bridgend, said: “I was replenishing supermarket shelves and just decided to try something new.
“I’ve always enjoyed making things with wood so carpentry seemed a great fit.
“I am glad I took the leap. I am enjoying working on site and learning a lot.
“The apprenticeship has put me on the first step of the construction industry ladder and I hope to progress possibly into joinery in the future.
“My advice to other women who are considering a career in the construction industry is to go for it if that’s what they want to do.
“I don’t get treated any differently to any of the guys on site. We’re just one team.”
Betty’s apprenticeship is being delivered by Bridgend College in conjunction with Persimmon.
Carl Davey, construction director for Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “Betty has fantastic ability, a positive attitude and thoroughly enjoys being part of the Persimmon team.
“We have a number of talented and enthusiastic women across our Wales sites, including Betty. She is a popular amongst her colleagues on site and is a valued member of the team.”
Persimmon this week marked International Women’s Day by launching its Target 50 initiative.
Target 50 sets an ambition for Persimmon to recruit 50 female apprentices or technical trainees into construction-related roles across Great Britain this year. The initiative forms part of Persimmon’s 50th anniversary celebrations and supports its commitment to building and retaining a more diverse workforce.
