Bugs check in to village Bee n Bee

16 October 2020

A Kent village that re-instated a thriving environment for creepy crawlies has received a donation of bricks from Persimmon Homes.

Persimmon Homes handed over the bricks to Caroline Carmichael, clerk of Headcorn Parish Council, who oversaw the refurbishment of the council’s popular Bug Hotel at the top end of the village.

Deputy clerk to the parish council, Stefan Christodoulou, said: “The original bug hotel was vandalised, so we decided to refurbish it. It’s filled with mini environments and is home to solitary bees, spiders, moths, earwigs and ladybirds.

“We used lots of different materials to create different environments and recognised that that house bricks would lend themselves perfectly for nesting locations – so cheekily we asked Persimmon for some.”

Persimmon Homes is currently building new homes in the village at its Saxons Chase development on Grigg Lane and was only too happy to hand over some bricks to help the bugs find somewhere to live!

A sign on the completed ‘Air Bee n Bee’ welcomes all insects to check in and says: “Encouraging biodiversity is good for the ecological balance. Giving these insects a home can help your garden to prosper and help the conservation of vital wildlife. Gardens can flourish as this insects’ hotels will house pollinating bees, attract ladybirds and lacewings, both of which are natural aphid and greenfly predators.”

Stefan added: “The council has always had a really good working relationship with Persimmon and it is great to see this continuing.”

Saxons Chase is a bespoke development of just 55 three, four and five-bedroom homes.
