Central team solidifies commitment to biodiversity at Erdington development
10 June 2024
Our Central team has solidified its commitment to sustainability and biodiversity at its Erdington development, with the re-planting of wild orchids within a wildflower meadow.
The successful replanting of the orchids, at our Holly Fields community, is the latest in a series of sustainability commitments. A collection of orchids were found on the land prior to development and were removed before building started. These were kept safe to grow off-site and were re-planted with the help of Focus Environmental Consultants.
Along with measures taken to support local bird nesting, the wildflower meadow will provide bees, butterflies and other pollinators with food throughout the year. The re-planting was marked by a visit to the development by Emily Berville Charlesworth, Land and Planning Manager at Persimmon Homes Central and Graham Davison, Director at Focus Environmental Consultants.
Graham Davison, Director at Focus Environmental Consultants said:
“We were delighted to get the opportunity to work with Persimmon Homes Central and re-establish these iconic plants for the enjoyment of new residents at Holly Fields. I firmly believe that Biodiversity should be for everyone and not just the preserve of the countryside. After the painstaking process of translocating the orchids off site and caring for them at a specialist orchid nursery it is fantastic to see them back where they belong and flowering again at Holly Fields.”
Emily Berville Charlesworth, Land and Planning Manager at Persimmon Homes Central said: “Creating this wildflower meadow at Holly Fields allows us to further commit to biodiversity on our sites across the region, just in time for summer.
“By installing wildflower meadows such as this one, we help to provide food and shelter for pollinators. According to the WWF, one acre of wildflower meadow can support nearly 96,000 honey bees per day, and we’re proud to be contributing to these statistics at Holly Fields.”
