Green light given for construction at major Wiltshire development

21 April 2026

A leading five-star developer behind a significant housebuilding scheme in Trowbridge has been awarded planning consent to deliver the first phase of housing on-site.

Approval for Persimmon Homes Wessex’s reserved matters planning application marks the next step in delivering an initial 161 high‑quality homes at Ashton Park to the south of the town.

The news marks a significant development in the delivery of up to 2,500 new homes in the area following the granting of outline planning consent last year to Persimmon Homes and Barratt Redrow in what will be a joint venture between the two companies.

Once complete, the long-term scheme will have delivered capital contributions of £25.6m from developers, and a Community Infrastructure Levy contribution of £7.5m for local projects. They will also deliver a £36.5m relief road, including a new section for the A350, notably bypassing the existing West Ashton crossroads.

The development’s long-term vision to create a thriving community is evident in the commitment to provide new schools, dedicated early years facilities, local centres, an ecology visitor centre, and employment land to ensure benefits for the town and county.

£5.4m will also be ringfenced for the Council to provide off-site affordable housing, in addition to the 27% of on-site homes reserved for local housing association partners.

Persimmon has a significant local presence in Wiltshire, with active developments in Chippenham, Warminster, and nearby Hilperton where new homes are available from £284,995.

Commenting, Persimmon Homes Wessex Managing Director Seb Spiller said “Our plans to bring much-needed new homes to Trowbridge has been many years in the making, so we are very excited to have reached this milestone allowing us to start construction on the first phase at Ashton Park.

“Whilst this first phase is for 161 properties, this is an extremely ambitious project that not only works to serve the housing needs of Trowbridge and wider area, but also significant investment that will generate funds for public services, community amenities, and local jobs.

“Persimmon’s scheme at Ashton Park will leave a positive and lasting legacy and we cannot wait to get started on site.”
