Group on track for funding boost

27 September 2022

A heritage railway in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside has received a £1,000 funding boost from Midlands region.

Northampton and Lamport Railway was selected to receive the funding through our Community Champions scheme, which aims to support grassroots organisations helping to make a tangible difference to the lives of local people.

Claire Dearsley, sales director for Midlands region, said: “Thanks to Community Champions, we are able to assist a wide variety of local good causes, like Northampton and Lamport Railway, with much-needed funding. The work they do brings enjoyment to many people from the area and beyond, so we are proud to help them.”

Preservation started at the wholly volunteer-run railway in 1984 and trains began to run along the 1.5 mile track in 1996, with plans to open a half-mile extension to Boughton.

Spokesman Daniel Callis said: “Earlier this year we launched the Ironstone Train Project, which would see us restore six ‘iron ore tippler’ wagons to help bring to life the long history of ironstone quarrying in this area.

“The cost to restore each wagon is around £500 and, so far, we have raised £1,200 so Persimmon’s generous donation will be a real boost to the project.

“We are also working to create educational and interpretive resources to enrich public understanding and appreciation of the rich industrial history of ironstone quarrying.”

Claire Dearsley added: “Through our Community Champions scheme, we make two donations of up to £1,000 every month to local sports clubs, schools, charities or voluntary groups.
