Planning permission for new Taunton homes
07 March 2025

Hartnells Farm housing development at the northern edge of the Monkton Heathfield urban extension has been given the green light by council officers.
South West will soon commence works on 90 new homes, all of which will be equipped with electric vehicle charging points.
22 of these, powered by solar panels, will be reserved for a local housing association, three of which will be accessible bungalows.
As part of a placemaking and environmentally friendly vision, a buffer of retained and new trees will line the north and eastern boundary, creating an ecological dark corridor for protected habitats.
An existing large oak tree in the south-east will be retained through creating surrounding open space, and a woodland walk through the north-east creating walking areas for both existing and new residents will also be created.
Tree lined streets and attenuation ponds will line the spine road, supporting natural flood runoff alongside basins in the south. Each home will also be accompanied by bird and bat boxes. Funds for local area will also be delivered via the Community Infrastructure Levy.
The 90 homes marks the final phase of Persimmon’s presence at Hartnells Farm. When the whole development – which has already seen its first residents move in – is complete, there will be 320 new homes for local people in the area.
Commenting, South West’s managing director, Dan Heathcote, said:
“Persimmon is very proud of the work we have done so far at Hartnells Farm and we are delighted to have finally secured permission to complete our vision for the new community we have helped build there.
“This latest planning permission means we are now one step closer to bringing more new, high-quality homes to the area, opening up the dream of home-ownership to even more local people, addressing housing need in the Taunton area.
“I’d like to thank the officers at Somerset Council for working pro-actively with us at Persimmon and look forward to carrying on that constructive relationship going forward.”
