Proposal for next 200 homes at major Wantage site submitted
24 January 2025

Wessex region at Persimmon Homes behind the major Wellington Gate development between Wantage and Grove has sent in its plans for the next phase of homes to the Vale of White Horse District Council.
The application for 199 high-quality homes is a joint one between Persimmon Homes Wessex and its sister company, Charles Church. They mark the eighth and sixth phases of development for each business, respectively.
A quarter of the properties will be reserved for a local housing association, further contributing to addressing housing need in the area. The entire scheme has already brought public open space and will deliver a bus route through the development once complete. Significant financial contributions for the local community also make up part of the final vision.
Persimmon’s Wellington Gate site, situated on the old airfield between Wantage and Grove, will see 1,500 high-quality homes constructed once complete. Three and four-bed homes are currently available for purchase.
Alongside the new homes, Persimmon has delivered a primary school, with sport pitches due to be handed over this year as part of the new sustainable community. Construction has also already commenced on the secondary school that form part of the overall plans.
Wessex region has also supported local groups such as Wantage Literary Festival, Sustainable Wantage, and Oxford Food Hub through its Community Champions initiative, which donates £24,000 each year to community organisations and good causes in the areas it develops. The business has also supported local career fairs in the area.
Commenting, Persimmon Homes Wessex’s deputy managing director, Seb Spiller, said:
“Both Persimmon and Charles Church are very proud of the progress we have achieved at our popular Wellington Gate site, so we are delighted to be bringing forward our plans for the next stages of development to the Council.
“Our vision for the completed development will yield excellent community benefits for existing and new residents, not just at Wellington Gate but, in Wantage and Grove too from financial contributions for local services to housing association homes to address housing need.
“We have worked well with the Vale of White Horse District Council over the years on this scheme and we look forward to continuing that partnership as we work through this latest planning application.”
