18-year-old builds a career in construction

An apprentice business administrator from York is proving that determination and enthusiasm are important qualities when embarking on a career in construction.

Jimmy Leigh joined the Persimmon Homes Yorkshire team in October 2019, after deciding full time further education was not for him. During the 18-year-old’s first year with the Fulford-based business, his passion for learning and can-do approach has seen him complete a site manager essential training course, work on a key development with the site manager as a mentor and gain a good understanding of the company’s construction operations.

Jimmy said: “After leaving school I was unsure what career path to take. I initially considered a sports and exercise course, but it did not feel right. Then I saw the Persimmon apprenticeship role and thought it sounded interesting - I am pleased to say I love it. The Yorkshire team have been really supportive and given me so many opportunities, I feel very fortunate. Special thanks go to Steve, Deborah and Andy who have always found time to answer my questions and help me progress. I enjoy the job so much that I will be starting a Level 4 Site Supervision course provided by NHBC.”

Steve Baron, construction director, added: “Each year we employee a number of apprentices in various roles as we believe it’s important, for both the business and the construction industry, to be supporting and developing our future workforce. Jimmy determination to learn and succeed is clearly evident so we are very happy to support his growing career within the business.”
