Housebuilder again donates £1,000 to twins' 100k challenge

Award-winning fundraising twins who smashed their £500 target for the children’s ward at Warrington & Halton Hospital have received a second donation from a leading housebuilder.

Brother and sister Ruben and Elena Evans-Guillen, aged nine and from Warrington, raised £15,000 in 2018-19 with their 100km challenge. Last June they were guests of honour at the official opening of the pirate-themed outdoor play area at the hospital and were able to see first-hand the achievements of their fundraising.

This year the twins, with help from dad Mark and mum Mercedes, have embarked on a similar challenge to trek 100km while raising funds for a new children and adolescent mental health (CAMH) room at the hospital. And now the pair have again been named Community Champions by Persimmon Homes North West and received a cheque for £1,000 through the match funding scheme. Mark said: “The target is £10,000 for the CAMH room. Currently the counselling room is in much need of some renovation which would make a huge difference to the young patients. New furniture, flooring and lighting would transform the room into a calm and pleasant space so that young people are able to feel more at ease facing their challenges in this safe, private environment. “Both Ruben and Elena live with ADHD. Their previous 100km run and this year’s trek help manage their symptoms by challenging their hyperactivity and improving their overall sense of mental balance and well-being. It also gives them increased self-esteem and a strong sense of community values.”

The trek is very much a family challenge with mum and dad beside them every step of the way and is set to include charity walks, walking festivals and obstacle courses. Helen Higginson, WHH Charity Manager, said: “We are yet again humbled by the passion and dedication of our young ambassadors who continue to make a difference for other children. The continued support of our partners like Persimmons Homes North West means we are able to continue our work to provide the ‘above and beyond’ care and facilities that make a difference for our young patients and their families. This support helps make dreams a reality.” Dave Hodgson, Sales Director with North West said: “We are delighted to again contribute to Ruben and Elena’s campaign to raise money for such a worthwhile charity – they are a real inspiration.”
