A ‘ssssssensational’ community art project has been installed at a new Swindon housing development.
Named The Badbury rock snake, the art project consists of more than 250 hand-painted rocks and is now a permanent fixture for future residents to enjoy, thanks to housebuilder Persimmon Homes Wessex.
Advertised with posters across the development, the rock snake was set up by Badbury Park resident and secondary school art teacher Jenny Green, who said she has been overwhelmed by the amazing response.
She said: “During the lockdown, residents were encouraged to paint a rock at home with their own inspirational design – lots chose to show their support to the NHS, others took the opportunity to paint a positive picture and get creative.
“The project has been a tremendous way to bring the new community together in a safe environment and it has been lovely to see local residents come out to have a look at the Rock Snake on their daily walk.
“I feel so proud seeing all the rocks on display and it’s a huge thank you to Persimmon Homes Wessex for making this a part of the development for future generations to enjoy. It marks a time that is certainly going to be remembered and a time that shows great community strength and support. It looks fantastic.”
The rocks have been displayed in a spiral motif at the development’s play area.
Director in Charge at Persimmon Homes Wessex, Julian Roper, said: “We were delighted to be contacted about the permanent installation of Badbury Park rock snake. Jenny has proved to be a real community champion, bringing residents together during a challenging time through her creative talents.
“Covid-19 has been a hard time for so many, but it has also been a time when communities have come together to bring positivity, and this is a great example of just that.
“We’re really pleased with the overall look and the residents all love the new development feature.”
The development, located on the northern edge of Coate Water Country Park, immediately attracted buyers when the developer started construction in June 2014. Recently, Persimmon Homes has acquired land to launch a new phase of development, which will provide a further 56 much-needed homes for the area. The phase will consist of three and four-bedroom properties, including 14 affordable homes, in response to an increase in demand for affordable new build homes.
