Persimmon helps lay foundations for construction careers

Persimmon is supporting a Norfolk initiative which introduces local young people to careers in construction.

Persimmon Anglia’s regional construction trainer, Gavin Springall, has joined forces with New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership as an enterprise advisor, focusing on social mobility.

His role is to work with local students from Wayland Academy, in Watton, to raise awareness of the career opportunities in construction and help them develop employment skills.

Gavin said: “I have previously been involved in mentoring within schools and saw this as a great chance to unlock the potential of some of the most disadvantaged local young people.”

“Persimmon has enabled me to work with a group of year 10 students every month, helping them to recognise the training pathways available to them.”

“Each of the group, which includes male and female students, has expressed an interest in construction, so the sessions in school are focused on the skills they would need to build on, including maths, science, design technology and English.”

The programme has included an overview of the varied job roles in the industry, how builders acquire land and secure planning consent, and an exploration of sustainability and the environment. The students have considered infrastructure projects and the economic impact of building, project management techniques, and selecting materials and resources.

Ashley Ruthven, enterprise co-ordinator for North Norfolk & Breckland, said: “It has been fantastic to see how engaged each student in the group has been during Gavin’s sessions. ”

“Along with learning all about the construction industry, the students have also had to apply learning from their school subjects. This is extremely valuable as it provides them with real life examples of how their studies can impact on their future therefore encouraging them to raise their aspirations.”

Gavin Springall added: “The format is something that could easily be replicated in other schools, either in the classroom or as an online programme.”

“I have been so impressed with the positive attitude and energy the students have shown and would be disappointed if we didn’t see at least some of them working for Persimmon in the future.”
