Apprentice engineer sees designs through to delivery

Apprentice engineer Courtney Power likes nothing more than seeing her technical designs and drawings become a reality as people move into their new homes.

The 21-year-old, who lives in Bourne, Lincolnshire, is awaiting the results of her HNC in Construction and the Built Environment ahead of moving onto Level 6 of her apprenticeship with Persimmon Homes East Midlands, based in Peterborough.

Courtney, who says she was inspired by her father and grandfather who both worked in construction, says: “I have loved my apprenticeship and for me it was a better way of learning and getting my qualifications than going to university.

“I always wanted to work in construction and I sought out an opportunity to begin as an apprentice engineer with Persimmon.

“The role is a big job and I work across such a broad range of technicalities that no day is ever the same. I can be creating duct plans or updating drawings or I can be out on site.

“I especially like going on site and seeing something that began with a drawing turned into an actual house and people moving in – that is the most rewarding part of the job.”

Courtney added: “I would not hesitate to recommend the apprentice route for qualification. It gives you practical experience and on-the-job learning. I did two days classroom based and the rest distance learning and it helped me enormously to apply the skills I was learning at work.

Ben Purdy, technical director for Persimmon Homes East Midlands, said: “Each year we employ a number of apprentices in various roles as we believe it’s important, for both the business and the construction industry, to be supporting and developing our future workforce.

“Courtney’s determination and passion are clearly evident, so we are very happy to support her career.”
