An apprentice from Blantyre is happy to brave the elements for his chosen profession.

Apprentice bricklayer Michael Reid has been praised for his hard work and ‘can do’ attitude as his employer marks National Apprentice Week 2021.

The 18-year-old has reached his third year milestone and says that bricklaying was the trade he wanted to explore, “Working outside in all weathers might not be for everyone but for me it means that I can learn the trade and being hands on is part of the job. The prospects for bricklayers are unlimited and being able to put into practice everything I have learnt so far is great.

“The best part of my job is seeing the end result, to be able to step back and see my brick-work in the finished house is very satisfying and I want to continue to build on my experience.”

Michael is one of nine bricklaying apprentices at Persimmon North Scotland that are celebrating their own milestones and achievements during National Apprentice Week.

Michael enrolled on the apprenticeship straight from school and now works fulltime at the Mosswater View development in Cumbernauld. He is studying Advanced Craft one week each month, on a block release basis, at South Lanarkshire College.

Michael added: “I have learnt such a lot at Persimmon and been given opportunities to work on two sites and I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship or a trainee job to anyone looking for this type of opportunity.”
