After three-years of full-time education a Doncaster construction apprentice believes on-the job-training is the best way to learn a trade.
To mark National Apprenticeship Week, Francesca Scholes shares why she feels this is the training route for her.
Following a full-time course in Travel and Tourism Francesca was not convinced she was on the right career path to secure her future. Joining Persimmon Homes South Yorkshire as a temporary receptionist, the 19-year-old was introduced to the construction industry.
Francesca said: “When I became aware of the apprenticeship opportunity, I was determined to secure my place. I have come to realise I prefer a more practical learning style where I can apply my skills immediately, and this is what an apprenticeship gives me.
“I am currently completing a Level 3 Business Administration course and I’m working within the construction department. I am getting the opportunity to understand all aspects of building from administration to the effective coordination of site management and successful construction.
“It’s not a job I ever thought I would be doing but I am loving the role and I look forward to work each day. I am already inspired to work my way up the career ladder.
“Working with a team of experts drives my passion to succeed and improve. I am grateful that my colleagues are so willing to support me.
“What makes me feel most proud is when I’m given the ownership of new tasks. This element of trust from my colleagues is a huge boost for my confidence and cannot be replicated when you study full-time. I would encourage others to join apprenticeship as I feel it is a more enjoyable and quicker way to advance your career opportunities.”
Richard Hosie, managing director for Persimmon Homes South Yorkshire, added: “Each year we employ a number of apprentices in various roles as we believe it’s important, for both the business and the construction industry to be supporting and developing our future workforce.
“It is a pleasure to have such an enthusiastic and keen apprentice as part of our team. Francesca’s passion will ensure she has a successful future in the construction industry.”
Commercial apprentice, Hope Batty is also pursuing her career with the Harworth-based business. Joining Persimmon Homes South Yorkshire in 2019, Hope is currently pursuing a Level 4 Construction Management course at Doncaster College.
