An organisation looking out for the health and wellbeing of elderly people in some of Newcastle’s poorest areas has been gifted cash support by Persimmon Homes.
SEARCH, based in Benwell, Newcastle, has been awarded £1,000 from Persimmon Homes North East’s Community Champions fund to continue its work combating financial, physical, mental and social poor health among its elderly clients in the west end.
Simon Luddington, for SEARCH, said: “SEARCH has supported older people in Newcastle's west end to lead healthier, happier, more independent lives for more than 40 years.”
“Our services have become pandemic-robust through increased use of telephone and computer technologies (zoom afternoon teas/lunches/quizzes/exercise classes/crafting sessions/digital buddies) as well as doorstep services. Fundraising to maintain services and prepare for more normal times ahead has been hard as the usual events organised have not been possible.”
“This Community Champions grant is very much appreciated as it will help us to provide a newsletter and to mail out local history and competition activity packs to keep vulnerable older people safely occupied and connected.”
Debbie Zaben, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes North East, said: “SEARCH is trying to keep some routine for its members and give them something to look forward to in very uncertain times. It is an excellent example of what our Community Champions scheme is all about, supporting good causes to make a positive change in the areas we work and live.”
Persimmon Homes North East launched Community Champions with a view to helping community groups, charities and good causes across Northumberland and Tyneside.
Each month the Newcastle-based builder donates up to £2,000 to community groups across the region. This also happens across Persimmon’s other 31 operating areas, meaning up to £64,000 is dished out every single month – a total of £768,000 a year.
Debbie added: “We would urge any group working with older people to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try and become our next Community Champion.”
