Hard working chippy Kyle preparing to launch career

A trainee chippy from Caerphilly is preparing to start his career after three years of hard graft.

Carpentry apprentice Kyle Havard has been praised for his effort and determination, as his employer Persimmon Homes marks National Apprenticeship Week 2021.

Kyle is a third-year apprentice, currently spending four days on site at Persimmon’s Willow Court development in Abergavenny, and one day at Cardiff and Vale College.

The 22-year-old from Abercarn decided to enrol on the apprenticeship programme after some time working in stores and warehouses.

“The apprenticeship is going really well,” said Kyle. “I’ve enjoyed every bit of it.

“I’ve always enjoyed working outside and getting hands-on, so this seemed like a great opportunity.

“It’s been amazing to learn new skills and I’ve particularly enjoyed working on the timber frames and joists.

“Nigel James, apprenticeships manager at Persimmon Homes East Wales, has been a fantastic support.”

When he is not on the building site, Kyle will most likely to be found downhill mountain biking in the scenic surrounds of his home.

Before turning his hand to carpentry, Kyle represented Team GB in the sport, even competing on the World Cup Circuit.

“I competed at a high level before I broke too many bones,” said Kyle. “Now I just do it for fun and have more recently moved into motocross.”

Also undergoing training with Persimmon and with high hopes for the future is 19-year-old Tyler Collins from Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Tyler is a trainee site manager and has been with the company for just a year.

He was recently named Persimmon’s Business Trainee of the Year, coming out on top of dozens of nominations from across the business, winning a trophy and a £1,500 boost in his paycheck.

He is currently studying HNC Construction at Bridgend College, having already completed his Level 4 NVQ.

“I’m extremely fortunate to have this opportunity with Persimmon,” said Tyler. “As trainee site manager I am responsible for carrying out a wide variety of tasks, including administration and building rapport with the trades and customers.

“Persimmon has been an amazing employer from the start. They have funded multiple qualifications and training opportunities and really want the best for my personal and professional development.

“My advice to anyone offered an apprenticeship or a trainee job is to grab the opportunity with both hands.”

Liam Puckett, Construction Director of Persimmon Homes East Wales, said: “Kyle and Tyler have both demonstrated an exemplary attitude to their work and a real hunger to learn.

“I am confident that they have a very bright future ahead of them and I look forward to watching them develop in their careers.”
