Moving from full time education to an apprenticeship is best for Charlie

A Leeds technical apprentice, who switched from full time education to an apprenticeship, believes this is the best way to learn a trade.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, 18-year-old Charlie Uttley shares why he feels this is the training route for him.

Charlie joined Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire in 2019 as a junior technical co-ordinator and embarked on a Level 4 HNC qualification in design and build technician, studying part-time at Leeds College.

Initially enrolled in full-time education, Charlie was keen to progress his career and noticed how other apprentices on his course were advancing quicker.

Charlie said: “Many of my friends in construction were apprentices and told me how you learn a lot more on the job so this was a big draw for me.

“Looking back, the full-time learning lay the foundation for understanding the various roles but the apprenticeship is very much making it a reality.

“I always wanted a career in construction. I think it’s in the blood with a lot of my family being in the industry, but just to make sure I did work experience at an architectural firm, another construction company and shadowed different tradesmen.

“My role has evolved from initially getting to know the basics of autoCAD and the construction processes to now having a greater understanding of expectations and the software systems. I have much more responsibility in producing, managing and distributing technical information.”

The Persimmon team share their expertise with Charlie and have recognised this determination to succeed by nominating him for the Persimmon Homes Achievers Award as business trainee of the year.

“I was delighted to become a Persimmon Homes Achievers finalist,” said Charlie.

“The regional management team nominated me, so it was great to know that my hard work and effort has been noticed by these people. I feel I am supported by many experts who are willing to give me their time and knowledge.

“I feel experience is hugely beneficial, not only in the practical sense, but in your career progression and apprentice roles help you achieve this much sooner, plus you also get a salary.”

Sue Clegg, technical manager for Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, added: “It’s a pleasure to have such an enthusiastic and keen apprentice as part of our team. We are all very happy to support Charlie as he is a perfect example of how an apprenticeship can successfully work. His passion, personality and determination will ensure he has a successful future in the construction industry.”

A further apprentice is Katie Duggan who joined the Leeds-based business in 2020 and is currently an on-site apprentice joiner.
