Opportunity awaits architectural apprentice Kody

Architectural apprentice Kody Turner is keeping an open mind about his future career prospects but is ready to seize opportunities as they arise.

As his employer Persimmon Homes South Midlands marks National Apprenticeship Week, Kody, who is on course for qualifying with an NVQ in the built environment and design, explained the benefits of being an apprentice in a busy department.

“The combination of my learning at Solihull College and working in a professional environment has been brilliant so far,” said 19-year-old Kody.

“I am bringing practical experience to my study and I can demonstrate what I have learned to my tutors. I think it is such a good way to progress and when I am in the office it is not just the architects but the technical department who are all generous with their time to help me and guide me.

“In particular, both Jon Davies and Niamh Adams, who are architectural technicians always have time to support and advise me, no matter how busy they are. Their help has been exceptional.

“I am hoping to be able to become chartered over the next few years and will follow that route through learning on the job too. There are any number of routes my career could take me and I look forward to all opportunities.

“I am drawn to design and have enjoyed amending house-types and site plans.”

Paul Coles, technical director for Persimmon Homes South Midlands, said: “Persimmon Homes manages a robust trainee and apprentice programme and we feel it is important to develop people for the benefit of both the company and the construction industry as a whole.

“It is encouraging to know that Kody enjoys his work and studies and that he values the support of his colleagues in the office. We all wish him well with his NVQ and continued success with his career.”
