York apprentice is building his future

A York construction apprentice is set to start his second apprenticeship with the same company and believes this is the best way to learn a trade.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, 18-year-old Jimmy Leigh shares why he feels this is the training route for him.

Jimmy joined Persimmon Homes Yorkshire in 2019 as a business administration apprentice.

Initially enrolling for full-time college studies in sport and exercise science, Jimmy quickly realised that, while enjoyable, it was not a long-term career for him or a satisfying way to learn.

Jimmy said: “I really feel I learn better through physically doing the job and by constantly putting my studies into practice. Initially I didn’t fully understand the construction industry and never expected that I would love it as much as I do.

“The support of the Yorkshire team and the whole company has inspired me to work hard which has ultimately opened new opportunities. I am delighted to be starting an additional apprenticeship to achieve the NVQ Level 4 in site supervision.

“Initially my job role was office-based, supporting the construction team. This gave me a clear understanding of all aspects of the department which has proved invaluable as I am now site-based.

“From Debbie in the office to Steve the construction director and the various site managers I have worked with, I feel fortunate to have had so many mentors who are rooting for me to succeed and willingly share their time and experience to help me learn.

“I feel I have had many proud moments from completing my first apprenticeship and the essential site manager course, to getting

the chance to progress my career by successfully securing my next apprenticeship.

“I would definitely encourage others to join an apprenticeship. It’s hard work but it’s a real-life learning opportunity and I feel will he

lp me achieve my long-term goal of becoming a site manager.”

Steve Baron, construction director at Persimmon Homes Yorkshire, added: “Each year we employ a number of apprentices in various roles as we believe it’s important, for both the business and the construction industry, t

“Jimmy’s determination to learn and succeed is clearly evident so we are very happy to support his growing career within the business.”o be supporting and developing our future workforce.

Apprentice bricklayer, Billy Coughlin also joined the Fulford team in 2019. He is currently pursuing a Level 2 Trowel Occupation qualification at Bishop Burton College.
