Two deserving causes in Leeds have each received a £1,000 donation.
Swillington Miners Welfare sports and social club and Morley Allstars Majorettes received the funds from the Community Champions scheme, which donates up to £64,000 to good causes across the UK every month.
The donations were awarded from West Yorkshire and will see Swillington Miners Welfare help fund its £300,000 transformation of its pavilion, making it accessible to more of the community, while Morley Allstars Majorettes will use the funds to support increased venue costs.
Jonathan Knowles for Swillington Miners Welfare said: “Our refurbishment plans are extensive. We are set to create a pavilion that all the community can use. The design includes wheelchair accessible ramps, a kitchen suitable for catering events and a raised balcony for watching matches.
“Our grounds are used regularly by football and rugby teams as well as bowling clubs. We are pleased to receive financial support from Sport England and the Football Foundation, but this is a big project and it’s the additional support of companies, like Persimmon Homes, that will help make it a reality.”
Work on the Swillington Miners Welfare pavilion and grounds is expected to begin in January 2022.
Toni Faulkner for Morley Allstars Majorettes said the donation is a huge boost to the club.
She said: “We welcome dancers from the age of two to 60, and older if they would like to join us. We are all about staying fit and having fun. As a troupe we offer Baton technique, Cheer Routines and Military Freestyle, all to competition level.
“The recent restrictions have limited our fundraising activity but has not reduced demand for our classes. We are now offering more sessions and therefore have larger rental bills. Persimmon Homes’ donation will help cover this increased cost and enable us to purchase more equipment.”
Under The Community Champions scheme, the West Yorkshire regional business provides financial support of up to £1,000 to two local charities or good causes, every month.
Christopher Hull, managing director for West Yorkshire, added: “These are two wonderful groups who support the community, whatever your age, and this is what our Community Champions scheme is all about.”
