Senior citizens club awarded £500

A Birmingham club that strives to bring together senior citizens to socialise and discuss sensitive matters has been awarded £500.

The Sons & Daughters of Rest (Brookvale branch) received the funding our Community Champions scheme.

Lynda Patrick, who applied, said: “Members are encouraged to communicate and join in group activities and functions in order to share information on general and local issues, thereby giving them a varied view on life.
“People look forward to retirement not realising the amount of free time they will have, which can become very isolating. Our club strives to alleviate some of that loneliness, as well as talking about matters that if not discussed early, can seem to become insurmountable.

“Bereaved spouses of late members are often friends with present members and continue to have access to a convivial facility. Single members also have the opportunity to integrate and not become an invisible member of senior society.”

Lynda said members are encouraged to bring along friends and neighbours to functions and added that the club offers a very full agenda of organised activities including short breaks away, coach trips, ladies day, quizzes, entertainment, and darts and cards competitions.

She said: “Thank you very much Persimmon, we really appreciate this funding which will help cover the costs of hired entertainment, food and transport.”
