Swindon brain injury charity secures vital funding from our Wessex region

A charity in Swindon that provides cognitive rehab for adults who have sustained a brain injury has been given a vital cash boost thanks to our Wessex region.

Headway Swindon has received a £750 donation from Wessex region as part of its Community Champions scheme.

Persimmon makes £64,000 a month available to fund local community initiatives across the UK.

Headway Swindon has supported hundreds of brain injury survivors to regain and relearn skills that have become impaired as a result of a brain injury and provide them with support and advice.

It delivers activities to promote cognitive and social rehabilitation, and each person has an individual plan to enable them to meet their goals and achieve their potential.

Sonia de Blaquiere, service development manager at the charity, said: “It’s great to receive this backing from such a big name in the local area like Persimmon Homes.

“We would like to establish a garden at our centre in Swindon, accessible to all clients and a place where we can encourage nature to flourish.

“The funds will be used to buy plants and materials to build habitats for wild animals so that our clients can learn about different insects and how the life cycle works.

“Clients will also be able to make bird boxes, build natural homes for insects and plant flowers to attract other wildlife.

“Mental well-being is usually an add on to the injury people suffer as they come to terms with the change of their life following an assault, road traffic accident, fall or stroke.

“Life changes beyond measure leading to poor mental health so this will also be a mindfulness area for those struggling to come to terms with their injury.”

Pauline Fletcher, sales director at Wessex region, said: “It gives us great pleasure to be supporting Headway Swindon this month as they provide such a vital service for the local community.

“Sonia and the wider team give support and advice to carers and loved ones to enable them to cope with and manage the impact of a brain injury on the family.

“The work they do is extremely challenging and can sometimes go unnoticed, so we wanted to reward them for helping clients attain the highest possible quality of life and assisting them back to independent living.”
