Apprentice master driving recruitment and training
29 July 2021

Persimmon Lancashire has appointed an apprentice master to drive the recruitment and training of tradespeople across Lancashire and Cumbria.
Ian MacDonald brings more than 40 years of construction industry experience, the last 17 of which as an apprenticeship officer for the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
Persimmon Lancashire managing director John Roocroft said: “The demand for new homes has never been higher, so we need quality craftspeople to deliver developments throughout our region. This pivotal role will support our ongoing recruitment and training programme, with Ian already working closely with local schools and colleges to engage with students and show them the opportunities available within the construction industry.”
Ian himself studied construction at HND then degree level, both with significant periods of industry placement, and progressed into site management before joining the CITB.
He said: “There is a huge national skill shortage within the construction industry and my challenge will be to attract the best candidates, support their training and help them to enjoy worthwhile and successful careers. This role will allow me to grow the apprentice provision within the Lancashire and Cumbria region, securing a loyal workforce for the company and to ensure all tradespeople are trained to the ‘Persimmon Way’ quality standards.
"It is important that we attract and retain the right talent. One of the great things about Persimmon is that because so many of the senior management have come from the trades themselves, young people can see that with hard work and ambition they can work their way to the top of the business.”
Ian, who lives in the Eden Valley, will work with apprentices at developments throughout the region, from West Cumbria, Carlisle and Penrith to Blackburn, Preston, Chorley and Blackpool.
