Apprentice works his way onto management pathway

12 February 2021

A young carpenter has his sights set on a career in construction management – with the support of his housebuilder employer.

Brandon Spencer, from Felixstowe, joined Persimmon Suffolk in 2018 as a trainee carpenter but impressed from the outset with his focus on the future.

Construction director Stacy Brett said: “Brandon made a proactive approach to me about joining Persimmon, and that was a clear indication of how driven he is to succeed. He was already in his final year of a level three carpentry apprenticeship with a very well-respected regional contractor but was looking long-term career progression.

“We agreed that he should complete his carpentry qualification and then move onto our trainee site management programme.

“As soon as he became part of that team, he impressed his line managers with his passion, commitment and drive to achieve his goals. He is now undertaking industry qualifications and I have no doubt he will become one of our best site managers. Brandon really is an asset to our company.”

The 21-year-old is now working at Persimmon’s Buckton Place development in Leiston.

Brandon said: “The training and support I am receiving from Persimmon Homes is exactly what I need to succeed in my career. Working alongside very experienced and knowledgeable colleagues is helping me to learn every day and see the role I can aim for.”

Persimmon Homes Suffolk managing director Ian Hamilton added: “As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, it is good to remind ourselves of the opportunities available within the construction industry.

“Brandon is the perfect example of the Persimmon Pathway training programme. The company prides itself on seeing the potential in young achievers and providing them with the career path and support to achieve their ambitions.

“In fact, this was the pathway that Stacy Brett himself followed when he joined Persimmon back in 2009, which just shows the possibilities for anyone willing to work hard.”
