Barry RFC score funding boost from East Wales region

05 December 2022

Barry RFC’s junior section has scored a funding boost from East Wales region.

The club’s under 8s has received a £1,000 donation from our East Wales region.

The donation comes through the Community Champions scheme, which supports good causes in the areas in which it is building, with up to £4,000 donated each month across Wales.

Members of the team were joined by local Vale of Glamorgan Councillors for Gibbonsdown, Julie Aviet and Margaret Wilkinson, for a cheque presentation by Persimmon on Friday evening.

The funding will be used to purchase the team new training tops and kit bags. The team has also undertaken bucket collections at local supermarkets and has a number of fundraising events arranged for the coming months.

East Wales region is currently building quality new homes at East Haven in Barry, offering a mix of three and four-bedroom homes, with prices starting at £299,995.

Commenting on the donation, Lisa Needham of Barry RFC, said:

“We are delighted to have been chosen by Persimmon as a Community Champion.

“Barry Under 8s are currently raising funds for an end of season tour, new training tops and kit bags.

“We have a dedicated and enthusiastic young team, and they are beyond excited at the prospect of a tour and much-needed new kit.

“On behalf of the children and Barry RFC, I would like to say a massive thank you to Persimmon Homes East Wales for supporting us.”

Vale of Glamorgan Councillors for Gibbonsdown, Julie Aviet and Margaret Wilkinson, who attended the cheque presentation on Friday, said:

“We’re delighted to see Persimmon Homes East Wales supporting Barry RFC and the club’s thriving junior section.

“The rugby club is at the heart of the local community, and does so much good for so many local people, particularly our youngsters.

“It’s a challenging period for many people and organisations, and it’s great that a local business with a long-standing presence in the town, has sought to support Barry RFC.”

East Wales regions sales director, Victoria Williams, said:

“We have a proud presence in Barry, and we are delighted to support the town’s junior rugby section.

“Alongside building much-needed homes in Barry and the wider Vale, we also want to leave a positive lasting legacy in the local community, and Barry RFC is a thoroughly deserving Community Champion.

“Persimmon’s Community Champions initiative is all about supporting the communities and people where we build, and we are delighted to help this group of young players with something they love.”
