Building a stronger community in Rainham

06 March 2024

Our team at Persimmon Homes Essex have given a cash boost to a Rainham community group working to tackle isolation and support young people in the village.

Our Essex region recently handed over a donation for £1,000 to Rainham ROYALS, a community centre located in the heart of Rainham village, traditionally a youth centre but now working with members of all ages to improve socialisation and reduce isolation. Each week 1,000 people pass through their doors, benefitting from one of the many sessions they run.

They host cooking on a budget classes funded by Clarion Futures to help families with finances and healthy living; holiday clubs that offer activities and lunch for children who miss out on free school meals during the break funding through the Government’s HAF programme; and art classes to encourage people to discover new hobbies.

Volunteers are able to signpost members to other support services if they are in need of further medical or financial help. The funding from Persimmon Homes Essex will be used to host an Easter party for all of their members – ranging in age from six months to 93 years old.

Sam Sheen, Vice Chairman of ROYALS, said: “Without this funding we would not be able to host this party and bring the whole ROYALS community together. Thank you to Persimmon for helping us to help the people of Rainham.”

Cllr Matt Stanton, Havering Borough Council member for Beam Ward, joined the presentation at Knightswood Place and thanked Persimmon for their support. He  said: “Even more residents are able to benefit from the work the team at the ROYALS carry out thanks to this donation.

“It is unfortunate that the council cannot always support groups financially, but it is really good to see local employers and businesses are able to help and offer grants so they can continue supporting our community.”

Luke Atkinson, Technical Director of Persimmon Homes Essex, said: “Rainham ROYALS is at the heart of the community, building links between neighbours and encouraging people to socialise to prevent isolation and the health risks associated with that. We are delighted to have been able to support them and to fund their Easter party, enabling members to meet up and spend quality time together.”
