Cardiac screenings given to half marathon runners
26 June 2012
Runners racing in the inaugural Persimmon Homes Malmesbury Half Marathon are set to receive a lifesaving check.
A complimentary artery scan, provided by Young@Heart, will help minimise the risk of heart attack and strokes caused by stiff arteries as a result of physical exertion.
“It’s vital that we are all aware how important it is to have artery health screening,” said Elaine Godley from Young at Heart. “It’s one of the reasons we have offered to give a free artery age test to every half marathon entrant, so they know they are ‘running fit’ before the race to minimise their risk of a stroke or a heart attack.
“Heart attacks and strokes are the UK’s biggest killer – one in three of all deaths. We want to reduce this risk by encouraging people to have a simple and safe artery age check that is supported by lifestyle education.”
James Higgs from race organisers DB Max Events, said: “With a growing number of sports people recently dying or seriously affected by a heart attack or stroke, we thank Young at Heart for the vital service they will offer our runners. So important is this issue, that we’ve also invested in a defibrillator and will be one of the few race organisers to own one and be fully trained to use it.
“I’m sure every runner will appreciate the value of this offer and we encourage them to make a donation to one of our nominated charities at the time of their artery scan.”
The Persimmon Homes Malmesbury Half Marathon is a 13.1 mile race that takes place on Sunday 23rd September at 11:00am. Over 300 runners from across Wiltshire and other parts of the country have already secured a place in the half marathon, which takes place around the historic town of Malmesbury.
Steve Roche, managing director of Persimmon Homes Wessex, said that as title sponsors they were only too pleased to see the community coming together to put on an event that the people of Malmesbury could take great pride in.
