Charity combating loneliness receives funding from Persimmon
01 October 2021
A charity that connects retired and unemployed men through a range of activities has received a vital cash boost thanks to Persimmon Homes.
Chippenham Men's Shed has received a £1,000 donation from Persimmon Homes Wessex as part of our Community Champions scheme. Through the scheme, we £64,000 available each month to fund local community initiatives across the UK.
The charity aims to promote social inclusion and good health among men in Chippenham and the surrounding areas, including those who are retired, unemployed or have health problems.
It provides facilities to carry out leisure activities and hobbies such as woodworking, metalworking and repairing electronics. It’s a place to pursue practical interests, enjoy making and mending, sharing skills and knowledge, building social connections and making friendships.
Trevor Eason, from the charity, said: “Firstly we would like to say a massive thank you to Persimmon Homes for this fantastic donation. We’re trying to raise money towards a base for our large shed so that we can use it for meetings once a week and this £1,000 will help us massively.
“We are primarily a group set up for lonely, retired men in the local area but ladies are also welcome. Our ageing population is growing and so too is the issue of loneliness and isolation among older people, so we would like to take this opportunity to spread the message about what services we offer.
“We’ve already raised money for our allotment scheme and we’re in talks with The National Lottery to help towards other areas of the charity so it’s a really exciting time for us.”
Pauline Fletcher, sales director at Persimmon Homes Wessex, said: “Loneliness and isolation can have a really negative impact on a person’s health and wellbeing, both mentally and physically. Now more than ever I think it’s important that we shine a light on this issue and make sure that people are getting the help they need.
“Chippenham Men's Shed provide so many brilliant services for retired and unemployed people in the local area and we’re extremely proud to be supporting them with this £1,000 donation.”
