Couple use lockdown savings to bag first home
16 November 2020
When Charlie and James’ summer was curtailed by the pandemic, the couple decided to put the money saved to good use – by stepping onto the property ladder.
Like many people, Charlie King and James Lovett had their holiday plans scuppered by Covid-19.
But, rather than feel too downbeat, the couple took the opportunity to take a major step in their lives together.
Today, a few weeks after collecting the keys, they are delighted with their two-bedroom property at Persimmon Homes’ Westminster Walk development in Bridgwater.
“We didn’t intend to buy initially, but we had some holidays planned which fell by the wayside so suddenly we had an amount of money available to do it,” said Charlie, who works at Hinkley Point C Induction Centre just five minutes away.
“We viewed the showhome and there was an instant attraction to the development and some of my friends live in the area.
“We looked at a couple of others, but not many, and just went for it. We’re really pleased with our new home.”
For Charlie, aged 22, it’s the first time living away from the family home.
She said: “James has lived on his own before, but for me, it’s the first time. I was a little worried perhaps, but it’s gone really well, and we’re well settled.
“I wanted to stay close to my family in Bridgwater, and I’m involved in the town carnival as well, so that is important to me.
“Two rooms is plenty for us as I’m not planning a family any time soon. We’re using the extra bedroom as a dressing room at the moment.”
Charlie and James, who works at Yeo Valley in Axbridge, were able to utilise the Government’s Help to Buy scheme to get moving.
And the couple’s Morden home was also Persimmon Homes Severn Valley’s property of the week, meaning they also secured extra incentives.
