Cricket club in Bradford celebrates funding win

30 October 2023

A cricket club in Bradford is celebrating after successfully applying for funding to improve facilities at their cricket ground.

Cullingworth Cricket Club has received a donation of £3,000 from West Yorkshire region after making an application to our Community Champions scheme.

Club committee member Lynette Elphee this week hosted representatives from Persimmon along with Bradford Councillors including the Deputy Lord Mayor to formally take receipt of a cheque for £3,000.

The money will be used to help the club improve the temporary spectator area built by club volunteers during the Covid pandemic.

Lynette Elphee, Fundraising and Sponsorship Committee Member, Cullingworth Cricket Club, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this funding especially in the year the cricket club celebrates its 150th anniversary.

“The club has gone through some difficult times where committee members feared for its survival, however with a lot of hard work and determination the club has come out stronger than we ever imagined.

“We enjoy great support from the local and wider community, and we thank everyone who has helped the club grow into what it is today.”

Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Falak Naz Ahmed said: “My two sons learned their basic cricket at the Cullingworth Cricket Club where they were welcomed and encouraged to take up the sport.

“The Club is close to my heart because of what they did for my children, and I am happy to see their continued good work for others.”

Bingley Rural Councillor Paul Sullivan said: “Sport is great for individuals and communities and Cullingworth Cricket Club is an important resource for the village and surrounding areas.”

Christopher Hull, Managing Director West Yorkshire region, said: “It’s a pleasure to support groups and clubs that play such an important role in their local communities.

“We’re delighted to be able to support Cullingworth Cricket Club in this way and wish them all the best of luck moving forward.”
