Cumbrian apprentice building a successful career in construction

17 February 2021

A young Cumbrian bricklayer has been praised as a model trainee by bosses at a national housebuilder.

Daniel Waugh, from Carlisle, joined Persimmon Homes in 2018 as a trainee bricklayer and quickly impressed with his skill and work ethic.

Contracts manager Richard Graham said: “National Apprentice Week gives us an opportunity to pause and recognise the brilliant development of our young trainees.

“Daniel is a model apprentice – his attendance and time keeping is exemplary, he is keen to learn and always responds positively to guidance from more experienced mentors.

“Not only have Daniel’s practical bricklaying skills developed immensely over the past two years, but he has mastered reading technical drawings and demonstrates a very positive approach to Health and Safety on site, making him an increasingly valuable member of the team.

“His success on site has been mirrored in this college studies, where he passed his first year with ease and gained high praise from his tutors. This willingness to learn and natural ability give Daniel the foundations of a long and successful career in the construction industry.”

The 18-year-old is now working at Persimmon’s Carleton Meadows development in Penrith.

Daniel said: “The training and support I am receiving from Persimmon Homes is exactly what I need to succeed in my career. Working alongside very experienced and knowledgeable colleagues is helping me to learn every day and see the senior roles I can aim for.”

Managing director John Roocroft added: “As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, it is good to remind ourselves of the opportunities available within the construction industry.

“Daniel is the perfect example of the Persimmon Pathway training programme. The company prides itself on seeing the potential in young achievers and providing them with the career path and support to achieve their ambitions.”
