Developer backs Herefordshire football

25 July 2025

The house builder behind the Hawthorn Park development in Leominster has donated £2,000 to a local football club.

The cheque was presented to Leominster Town FC at its local ground, Bridge Street Park, after they were successful in their application to Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions scheme.

The club was founded in 1893 and caters to both boys and girls aged between four and eighteen, with 215 players across 15 teams at the club. The funding will go towards the club’s Under 8s team.

The accredited five-star builder is constructing 353 much-needed, high-quality home at Hawthorn Park, from one-bed flats to five-bedroom houses.

The Deputy Leader of Herefordshire Council and local councillor, Allan Williams, recently visited the site to mark the opening of the development’s showhome.

All homes will be equipped with solar panels, while over £500,000 was spent by Persimmon on credits to ensure the development is nutrient neutral, meaning no harm is caused to the River Wye and its tributaries. The development will trigger £1.8m of financial contributions from the developer to the community, including for local education, recycling facilities, sports facilities, transport improvements, and attenuation measures.

Commenting, Persimmon Homes East Wales Sales Director Victoria Williams said “With progress coming along nicely at Hawthorn Park and the opening of our new showhome heralding the beginning of sales, we are delighted to be demonstrating our commitment to leaving a positive and lasting legacy in Leominster with this support for the local football club.

“Persimmon has a proud record of backing local sports where we develop as its important to give some backing to the institutions that make those places so great to live in in the first place. We wish all the teams at Leominster Town FC the best for the new season ahead.”

Luke Savage – Vice Chairman at Leominster Town FC – added “Throughout its history, Leominster Town FC has been more than just a football club; it has been a cornerstone of the local community. The club’s activities have brought together people of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a sense of unity and pride among the town’s residents.

“So, we are really grateful that Persimmon have recognised that and felt we were worthy winners of their Community Champions funding scheme. This will help us maintain our offering for our youngest players as they develop some valuable skills playing the sport they love.”
