Developing a firm foundation for construction apprentices
07 February 2022

Persimmon Homes is pledging its ongoing support to apprentices across the business with a series of apprentice manager appointments.
Persimmon has recently added to its ranks of apprentice managers, recruiting six new managers based in our businesses in Lancashire, the North East, Yorkshire, North West, Cornwall, and Scotland. The apprentice managers have a remit to support and help develop a talented workforce for the future.
A strategic approach to recruitment, communication, education and hands-on experience has been adopted to attract and support apprentices throughout their journey with Persimmon. The end goal is to nurture talent and create a fulfilling career for all apprentices.
Apprentice manager Ian MacDonald is working across Lancashire and Cumbria. He joins Persimmon with more than 40 years of construction industry experience, the last 17 of which were spent as an apprenticeship officer for the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
The North East, Durham and Teesside are covered by apprentice manager Michael Johnson. Prior to joining Persimmon Michael was a quality advisor for the CITB.
William Smith is Scotland’s apprentice manager. His in-depth knowledge and links within the industry, trade qualification bodies and colleges across Scotland have been developed during 33 years with the CITB, where he recruited and supported more than 5,000 apprentices.
Paul Curry, Persimmon’s group training manager, said the business was focused on ensuring that every apprentice joining Persimmon would be guided and supported from their first day.
“The appointment of dedicated apprentice managers demonstrates our commitment to apprentices joining Persimmon. Alongside the work we do internally, we are also forging links with schools and colleges across the UK to attract a diverse range of apprentices searching for their first role in the construction industry.
“Persimmon has a strong track record with people who have joined us as young apprentices or trainees and spent their whole career with us, some of whom are now in senior management roles and our objective is to continue this trend.”
