Duo of Norfolk good causes celebrate funding boost

18 February 2022

Two good causes in Norfolk are to receive a funding boost from Anglia.

Caister Cricket Club receives £1,000 and Norwich-based Action Community Enterprises CIC has been granted the £950 it applied for.  The donations come from the Community Champions scheme, which was established to support local charities, organisations and good causes.

Tim Oxborough of Caister Cricket Club said: “Our village club has been established for more than 100 years, playing in the Norfolk league every Saturday and Sunday in the season.

“Like many sports teams, we have been finding it hard to maintain a full squad and with an ageing member profile we are being proactive in trying to attract more young people. We have invested in training for our coaches’ qualifications so we can run youth sessions and are now offering indoor net practices for children during the winter months.

“We are grateful to Persimmon Anglia for this £1,000 which will be used to buy new team shirts for the children, as well as new bats, balls, stumps and cones which are all vital if we are to inspire the children and futureproof our club.”

Lance Vincent of Action Community Enterprises said: “We are a small, not for profit community organisation running a range of projects and support programmes for children, young people and adults, including the long term unemployed and ex-offenders.

“We are raising money to develop a small piece of land we have acquired to create a community scheme called ‘Grow Your Own’ for vulnerable young people and adults within areas of rural deprivation around Great Yarmouth.  This will focus on the growing of food and teaching cooking skills workshops at our nearby training centre.

“We would like to say a big thank you to Persimmon Homes Anglia for the £950 which we will be using to buy a small lockable shed and a water butt with a connected irrigation system. These items will make a big difference to our plans for the ‘Grow Your Own’ initiative.”

Michelle Baker, managing director for Persimmon Anglia, said: “These two Norfolk good causes are very much at the heart of the community, but in very different ways.  One is a long-established sports club that needs some help getting in new, younger members involved and the other is supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our region to learn new skills.

“Both are doing exactly what Community Champions was created for and we are delighted to be able to help them with these donations which we know are going to be very well spent.

“Community Champions is open to charities, organisations and good causes around our region and we would encourage any who are looking for a donation to apply online.”

The Community Champions scheme offers two grants each month to clubs, schools, charities, and voluntary organisations across Norfolk.
