Event celebrates growth of new community
07 April 2015
Partners developing an exciting new community to meet demand for housing in Crawley have come together to celebrate its progress.
Demand has been strong for the first phase of Crawley’s newest neighbourhood, Forge Wood, where 1,900 homes consisting of a mix of private, shared equity and council homes will be built.
When complete, the site near Pound Hill, will offer residents a primary school, shops, central parkland, a community building and a health centre, as well as cycle and transport links to Crawley and Gatwick Airport.
The Forge Wood project partners are the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA), Crawley Borough Council (CBC), together with neighbourhood development partners Persimmon Homes and Taylor Wimpey.
Representatives of each organisation gathered on site for a reception and to enjoy a site tour to witness first-hand the progress being made as the first homes to be built at the new community near completion.
Martyn Clark, managing director of Persimmon Homes Thames Valley, said: “After a great launch we have reserved all of our first released plots and have just released the next five plots for sale. Our show home is opening next month and we are expecting a further surge in interest driven from that.
“The range of schemes available, both from developers and through the Help To Buy Scheme, makes Forge Wood a great prospect for all would-be buyers.
“This is an exciting new project and Persimmon Homes is delighted to be a development partner.”
Taylor Wimpey South Thames managing director, Chris Carney agreed: “As expected, demand for properties at Forge Wood has been very high. The various buying schemes available from the developers, including the Government-backed Help To Buy scheme, have attracted a range of purchasers, at all stages of the property ladder, from first-time buyers to downsizers.
“Once complete the Forge Wood development will be an excellent asset to the existing community of Crawley.”
And Robert Napier, chairman of the HCA, added: “I am proud that the HCA has been able to be part of creating this new neighbourhood. This development demonstrates what can be achieved when the public and private sector work together to release public sector land and fulfil local needs.
“From what I have seen today these homes are of a high standard and a really great community is starting to take shape."
Crawley MP Henry Smith, welcomed the development, saying: “Crawley’s newest neighbourhood of Forge Wood is being built to provide an important mix of much needed, good quality homes with a strong sense of community. I welcome this for our borough who’s motto is ‘I grow and I rejoice.’”
Leader of Crawley Borough Council, Cllr Peter Lamb, said: “It’s great to see Crawley’s 14th neighbourhood well underway, which is already providing good employment opportunities for local people.
“ The development will certainly help towards easing the town’s housing issues and I’m delighted that we’re adding more than 500 homes to the council’s stock.”
