Good causes receive a boost from housebuilder

Two village schools and a voluntary medicine transportation service in the East Midlands are among the latest raft of winners announced by our innovative Community Champions programme.
Each month, the company’s East Midlands division donates up to £1,000 each to two locally-based charities or good causes.
Successful bidders this time around included a Lincs-based small school federation comprising two village schools in the area. Gedney Hill and Shepeau Stow Parent Teachers Friends Association (PTFA) is planning to install greenhouses at the school sites to address ‘nature deprivation’ and improve pupils’ connection to the natural world.
Spokesperson Katie Brook said: “More children are spending a lot of time indoors, leading inactive, unhealthy lifestyles. Through our greenhouse project we hope to correct this imbalance and promote healthy lifestyle choices. Our donation from Persimmon brings this ambitious plan one step closer.”
Another beneficiary of our charity funding is SERV Suffolk & Cambridgeshire, a local provider of transport services to NHS hospitals, hospices and air ambulances. The Whittlesey-based group requested support towards refresher retraining for its volunteers, ranging from advanced driving to transportation and delivery training.
Group spokesperson Cindy Dickerson said: “We deliver anything from blood, milk and medicines to vulnerable patients around the clock, every day. The donation from Persimmon will help us meet retraining costs for our 150-or-so volunteers. We don’t receive any government funding so we rely exclusively on public generosity, charitable grants and awards.”
On behalf of East Midlands, regional marketing and sales director Nova Eames said: “Both the schools’ PTFA and SERV do amazing work in our local communities. Encouraging children into outdoor pursuits helps with mental wellbeing, while transporting supplies to hospitals and patients is a vital and very valued service.
“We are delighted to support these enterprises through our Community Champions fund and we wish them every success in the future.”
