Heywood and Rochdale sports clubs receive ‘grand’ funding boost
15 June 2015
Two popular Heywood and Rochdale area sports clubs have been given a much-needed cash boost thanks to a regional builder’s community support initiative.Queensway Amateur Boxing Club (pictured) and Roach Dynamos Blacks under-13s football team will each receive a £1,000 donation from Persimmon Homes North West as part of their Community Champions scheme.
The scheme will see a pot of £24,000 donated to local groups and charities over the next 12 months throughout the region. Two groups will be chosen every month to receive a match-funding donation and organisations are being encouraged to apply by completing an online form at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity.
Queensway ABC is led by former England and British Army team boxer David Hodkinson, who said: “As a not-for-profit club we rely on subscriptions and fundraising to provide professional coaching to local young boxers. This fantastic donation will help us to fund the medical examinations, safety and boxing equipment we need to continue to keep our athletes safe and enable them to develop their skills. Anyone interested in joining the club can find out more on the Queensway ABC Facebook page."
Roach Dynamos is a successful local football club, fielding teams from under-6 development right up to under-18s. Steve Cloran, under-13s team manager, said: “Every year we raise money by hosting a two-day tournament that attracts sides from across the North West. We also do a lot of local fundraising to maintain the club. Our pitches are adjacent to Persimmon’s Fairfield View development on Sutherland Road, so we share a local connection and most of our players are from this area. We are very grateful to the company for this brilliant donation, which will allow us to provide new team jackets for our under-13s.”
Timothy Pegg, land director for Persimmon Homes North West, added: “Community Champions aims to help groups and charities that make a real difference to the lives of local people. Both of these excellent sports clubs are working hard to give young people a taste of teamwork and achievement, so we are proud to support their endeavours.”
The Persimmon Community Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves. Nationwide the company will donate a total of £750,000.
