Home run for Wales’ only American baseball club after funding boost
25 January 2022
Wales’ only American baseball club has hit a home run with a cash boost to help buy new equipment.
Cardiff Merlins Baseball Club has received £1,000 through our Community Champions scheme.
Each month we donate up to £64,000 to good causes across the UK – and up to £4,000 to groups in Wales.
Founded in 2018, Cardiff Merlins Baseball Club became champions of the South West & Wales Baseball League for the first time last season.
The club is expanding this year by launching a second team, meaning more equipment is required.
Edward Peebles, the club’s treasurer, said: “We’re thrilled to receive this generous funding from Persimmon Homes.
“Having a second team will mean more players will be able to take up baseball and gain the many benefits that being part of a team brings, such as becoming - and remaining – physically active, learning to work as part of a team and increased confidence.
“We will need to buy new playing equipment including batting helmets, catcher’s protective equipment, new bats, fielding gloves and kit bags. This will ensure that we continue to give the opportunity to play baseball to as many people aged 16 and over in the local area as possible, while keeping our membership fees affordable.”
Victoria Williams, Sales Director at East Wales, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support Cardiff Merlins Baseball Club with this money.
“There’s clearly a growing interest in American baseball in the area and we’re pleased to be able to help people get involved in the sport.”
