Housebuilder supports West Monkton Parish’s upgrade plans for Maidenbrook Country Park

13 March 2025

Persimmon Homes South West has donated £6,000 to West Monkton Parish Council to support its plans to enhance Maidenbrook Country Park.

The funding comes as part of a broader project, led by the Parish Council, to make Maidenbrook Country Park and Somerset Wood more accessible and inclusive for the local community.

The initiative has already secured National Lottery funding for the next three years to increase public use of the park, but an additional £96,580 in match funding is required to fully realise the project.

The proposed upgrades include the installation of accessible pathways and a small disabled parking area, ensuring the park can be enjoyed by all visitors. The Parish Council is appealing to local businesses and stakeholders, such as Persimmon Homes, to help meet the funding target.

The £6,000 donation was made through Persimmon’s Community Champions scheme, which supports good causes across the region. The housebuilder had previously donated £1,000 earlier this year to support the Parish’s Poppy of Honour project, which will bring a unique memorial to Somerset Wood.

Persimmon is currently constructing the Hartnells Farm housing development on Monkton Heathfield Road. The final phase for 90 homes – including a quarter designated as affordable housing – is currently under review by Somerset Council. The developer is also part of the consortium which has developed the Monkton Heathfield extension.

The housebuilder donates over £700,000 annually to local causes as part of its Community Champions scheme. Other recent recipients include St John Ambulance Taunton, Wellington Baptist Church, and Ilminster Town Council.

Commenting on the donation, Rob Clark, Land Director at Persimmon Homes South West, said:

“Persimmon is delighted to support West Monkton Parish Council in delivering vital improvements to Maidenbrook Country Park.

“This project will make the park a welcoming and accessible space for the entire community, and it aligns perfectly with the aims of our Community Champions scheme which supports key initiatives where we develop.

“With our presence at Hartnells Farm and Monkton Heathfield, we’re proud to play a part in enhancing the area for both current and future residents.”

Cllr Stuart Haskins, Chair of West Monkton Parish Council, said:

“We are thrilled to receive this generous donation from Persimmon Homes South West.

“The funding will help us take important steps towards delivering our vision for Maidenbrook Country Park and Somerset Wood, ensuring it remains a fantastic asset for the community.

“Persimmon’s support is a great boost to our fundraising efforts, and we look forward to continuing this momentum as we work to secure the remaining funding needed for this exciting project.”
