Lancashire good causes celebrate donations

Two Lancashire-based community causes are celebrating after being selected to receive funding through Community Champions.
The Lancashire regional team selected Preston Swimming Club and Safenet to each receive donation of £1,000.
Founded over 45 years ago, Burnley-based charity Safenet provides specialist help to survivors of domestic abuse. In Lancaster, it currently provides safe spaces for up to 28 individuals and families, including those who struggle to access standard provisions.
The charity applied for funding to launch a special event, as spokesperson Joanne Claessen explained: “We are proposing a one-off afternoon garden party to celebrate both the one year opening of our new refuge and to bring all residents and staff together for a ‘mini-festival’ themed afternoon. Here we will focus on activities designed to improve the well-being of all participants.
“This kind donation from Persimmon will help bring this wish to reality.”
Also chosen for funding was Preston Swimming Club, which provides pool time, coaching and social activities for people of all ages and abilities. Next year the club is looking to compete at the World Masters Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
“Persimmon’s donation will help us fund the team's travel and accommodation expenses,” said spokesperson Katie Hands. “This is so vital as we want to compete in both men's and ladies’ events as well as entering relay teams. We truly believe we have medal chances in some events, though our training has been badly affected by the pandemic.”
Persimmon Lancashire sales and marketing director Diane Finch said: “Though very different, Safenet and Preston Swimming Club both provide valuable services to local people. We sincerely hope that this additional funding will help them achieve their aims, and we wish them every success in future.”
