Last chance for home ownership in Standish
02 June 2021
Househunters in Wigan who are struggling to buy their own home have a last chance to get on the property ladder.
Affordable home ownership opportunities are available at The Fairways in Standish, a development of new homes from Persimmon Homes.
When it launched the development, Persimmon teamed up with Wigan Council’s Affordable Homes Scheme to offer a number of properties to local people at 70% of their market value.
Dave Hodgson, Sales Director for Persimmon Homes North West, said: “There are a number of Government schemes that make homes affordable, but the Wigan Council scheme targets local people, giving them a helping hand to buy a home within their own community.
“It is a brilliant scheme and the feedback we have had is that it’s a quick, straightforward and hassle-free way to becoming a homeowner in your home town.”
The scheme invites people who are struggling to get on the property ladder to apply for an equity loan from the council. Wigan Council provides a loan for a percentage of the property’s value – usually 30% - with buyers then required to put down just a 5% deposit and secure a mortgage for the balance of the house price.
Once complete, they will own the property, with no rental payments required and no interest payments due on the loan – they simply pay it back at the end of the term, usually 25 years, or before.
To qualify, buyers need to live, work or have a family connection within Wigan borough.
An example of the scheme in operation at The Fairways is the three bedroom Moseley style home with a full asking price of £166,995 is available through the scheme at the affordable price of £116,896.
