Laying the foundations for successful careers

Two young Persimmon Suffolk professionals are encouraging school and college leavers to consider careers in construction.
Sam Nixon and Callum Mackie both joined the company in 2018 and have quickly established themselves as valuable members of the Technical and Commercial team at the Great Blakenham regional headquarters.
Sam, aged 20, is currently starting his third year of a degree apprenticeship in Architectural Technology. Before joining the leading housebuilder, he had completed a level 3 qualification in Construction and the Built Environment.
He said: “My work involves helping to plan the layouts of new homes developments, planning applications and the detailed drawings needed for construction. I love my job and learn something every day.
“Working alongside a great team of more experienced colleagues is an important part of my training. Persimmon is built around progressing its people and there is lots of career development and support. I look forward to what the future holds, continuing to learn working for Persimmon Homes”.
Assistant Quantity Surveyor Callum, 21, initially worked for a small roofing contractor, learning about the construction industry, and found he had an aptitude for the costing and project management process. Callum also completed a Level 4 HNC Construction Management course and is currently studying Quantity Surveying at Anglia Ruskin University.
“I can be a bit of a perfectionist,” he said. “But that eye for detail is important for a quantity surveyor, managing costs, checking tenders and contracts and ensuring the project runs to schedule and budget.
“I plan to go as far as possible in my career with Persimmon. The company is very supportive of its trainees, and there are lots of opportunities for long-term, sustainable careers in this industry.”
Persimmon Suffolk managing director Ian Hamilton added: “As a company we recognise the importance of supporting and developing staff to provide the best possible service to our community and customers.
“We take great pride in our Persimmon Pathway internal training programme which enables employees to progress in their careers and we are always especially proud to recruit and develop the young housebuilders of the future.”
