Morrisons secures deal at Newcastle Great Park
03 March 2021
Persimmon Homes and Taylor Wimpey have exchanged contracts with Morrisons, for a circa three acres site within the Town Centre at Newcastle Great Park.
Following the completion of the deal, a planning application is scheduled to be submitted in March 2021, with a decision expected in the summer. It is hoped that the new store will be open at the end of the year.
Morrisons new 38,000 sq ft store will showcase the best of British and locally produced foods and is set to create 140 new jobs. The store will also have a dedicated Community Champion who’ll play an active role in the local community by supporting local projects, fundraising for local good causes and working with community groups.
Situated just five miles from Newcastle City Centre, Newcastle Great Park is a sought-after location for both families and first-time buyers, with a mix of homes available across a number of developments.
Morrisons joins other businesses at the location, including estate agents, Brunton Residential, the Guinot Salon and the Great Park Pharmacy at the centre of the development.
A spokesperson for the consortium said: “We’re delighted to announce that the deal with Morrisons is now complete and the news will no doubt provide a boost to the local community.
“These are still challenging times for everyone therefore it’s good to see positive steps being made, despite the pandemic, which will provide the community of Newcastle Great Park with vital facilities.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the plans take shape over the coming months and are confident that securing a major anchor supermarket will act as a catalyst for further investment within the town centre.”
Morrisons senior development manager, James Smith said: “The Great Park development will create a new community which we’re pleased to now be a part of. We look forward to completing the store, creating new jobs and welcoming shoppers to Morrisons Great Park.”
Cabinet Member for Employment and Culture, Cllr Ged Bell, said: “This is fantastic news. Having Morrisons opening a store at Newcastle Great Park will be warmly welcomed by residents who live there and have waited a long time for this.
“The creation of 140 jobs I also warmly welcome and with us coming out of the pandemic the timing could not be better.
“Obviously, any application will have to be subject to the usual planning process and a decision by planning committee.
“Even so this is a very positive step forward in our long-held ambition to create a sustainable community, and I look forward to even more new shops and jobs at Newcastle Great Park.”
Units are still available at Newcastle Great Park, ranging from 1,000 sq ft to 3,000 sq ft and offering A1 to A5 usage classifications. For commercial and retail enquiries of how to become part of this growing community please contact @retail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
