North West builds on charity support
23 October 2014
A fund to build a holiday home and support centre for families dealing with the impact of childhood cancer has received a £10,000 boost from Persimmon North West.
Staff at our Persimmon Homes North West head office, based at Urmston, raised the much-needed funds for their chosen charity, The Joshua Tree, through a series of events and challenges.
The company presented a cheque at the charity’s Family Support Centre in Northwich.
Our sales and marketing director David Hodgson said: “The work of The Joshua Tree touched our hearts two years ago and we have dedicated our fundraising efforts to helping the charity ever since.
“The organisation aims to build a holiday house and support centre at Sandiway, Cheshire, to enable families coping with the worry of a sick child to spend some quality time together and receive the practical help they need.
“We are very proud to have raised £10,000 so far this year through a variety of staff events at our offices, such as cake sales and raffles. Several of the team have also been sponsored to tackle running or cycling challenges.”
Joshua Tree founders, Lynda and David Hill, felt very strongly that they wanted to create a haven for families to be able to spend quality time together in a safe environment after experiencing for themselves, with their son Joshua, how much of a family's initial time after diagnosis revolves around the hospital, with siblings having to spend time with carers whilst 'mum and dad' begin a process of adjustment at the child's bedside.
Lynda Hill said: “My son Josh was diagnosed with Leukaemia just one week into year one of his school life. As Josh had a greatly reduced level of immunity due to his Leukaemia, we were advised not to go on holiday during the first year of treatment and, from this experience, the initial ideas about the Joshua Tree were born.”
