Persimmon Homes apprentice wins national Levelling Up award
27 May 2021
An apprentice joiner from Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire has been honoured as part of the national inaugural Levelling Up Awards.
The awards celebrate the work underway by organisations to level up communities across the UK to help build back even better than before.
Katie Duggan was recognised for her personal achievements by former Education Secretary Rt Hon Justine Greening and was one of seven individuals to be named as a Spotlight winner.
The 20-year old joined Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire in 2020 as an on-site apprentice joiner. Initially, Katie had enrolled on a full-time joinery course at Leeds College but impressed the Persimmon West Yorkshire MD and construction director who were visiting the college and was subsequently offered the apprenticeship.
The Levelling Up Goals were launched earlier this year by Justine Greening to provide a benchmark for activity focused on driving equality of opportunity from early years through to careers, and addressing barriers such as the digital divide, health and infrastructure and features a goal of building homes and sustainable communities.
Katie said: “I am absolutely delighted to be given this award. From a young age I knew I wanted to learn a trade. I spent a lot of time with my brother working on his bike and it was this hands-on approach and finding solutions that made me so sure.”
“I was delighted to join Persimmon Homes. The apprenticeship is giving me much more real-life experience and at a quicker pace than I think I would have got at college. There are not many women on the site, but I don’t feel this makes any difference. At the start, some of the team tried to give me easier jobs but that is not the case now. They can see that I am very capable and I’m just another member of the Wakefield site team.”
“I’m loving my apprenticeship, and my long-term career goal is to become a site manager.”
Former Education Secretary Rt Hon Justine Greening said: “The Levelling Up Goals provide a clear benchmark against which UK organisations can measure their impact. Levelling up is something that needs to be addressed throughout the UK and it's great to see so many influential organisations and leaders at the forefront of the agenda.”
“I’d like to congratulate Katie Duggan at Persimmon Homes in winning this Spotlight Award and for everything she is achieving with Persimmon. She has an incredibly bright future ahead of her.”
Christopher Hull, managing director for Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, said: “We are very proud to support Katie’s career progression. Her attention to detail and enthusiasm was evident from the first time we met her at Leeds College and it’s pleasing to see that it’s not just us who can see her potential.” Katie is currently based at Persimmon Homes’ sister brand site, Charles Church Windsor Park in Wakefield.”
