Persimmon Homes creates haven for endangered species

25 June 2012

Persimmon Homes has revealed a stunning new development near Grimsby which caters not only for new house hunters, but also for an endangered species.

Persimmon Homes Yorkshire has worked closely with environmental consultancy firm, SLR Consulting, to help provide a sanctuary for a colony of protected newts, at its recently opened site in Holton Le Clay.

Three ponds are being created within the site to provide new homes for the great crested newt, the largest of the three native British newts and one of the most heavily protected species in Britain.

Speaking of the new development, Kevin Thubron, sales director for Persimmon Homes Yorkshire, said: “We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and are passionate about designing homes that are sensitive to the environment in which they are built.”

Situated in close proximity to the east coast the Green Pastures development features 30 properties with the prospect of further homes in the future.

Gary Oliver, ecological consultant from SLR Consulting, who managed the Holton Le Clay development, said: “The new ponds will dramatically improve the habitat for the newt population in this area. This species is very localised in its distribution so it is important that the correct habitat is created for them to thrive.

“Before the building work began, the newt population was counted, captured and transported to a temporary receptor site. We hope to establish a metapopulation, linking newts from the surrounding areas using a series of newly-created ponds. As well as the three new ponds at Green Pastures, angled curbs will be installed to make it easier for the newts to move freely around the site.”

A Chedworth show home recently opened its doors at Green Pastures, celebrating the new development which features eight different property styles.
