Persimmon Homes lays foundations with youth counselling project

01 April 2019

A pioneering counselling service in Peterborough has been selected as the first regional group to benefit from a new funding scheme targeting youth projects.

The Annabelle Davis Centre will receive £1,000 from the Persimmon Homes Building Futures initiative, launched in partnership with Team GB, the British Olympic Association.

The Young People’s Counselling Service (YPCS) is looking to open the region’s first community resiliency centre in Peterborough, working with local authorities and police to provide intervention and prevention services before more serious issues arise.

The resiliency centre will be named after BAFTA-nominated actress Annabelle Davis, known for he role in CBBC series The Dumping Ground.

The YPCS has recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and has also earned the patronage of Annabelle’s father – actor and TV personality Warwick Davis who said: “I am proud to be a patron YPCS as they embark on their journey to help more children with mental health issues. Young people today face more challenges in life than any generation to date, and YPCS will be there in support of them.”

Nick Phillips, director in charge of Persimmon Homes East Midlands, based in Peterborough, said: “Mental health and wellbeing is increasingly a matter for concern in communities and is touching more lives. We are pleased to be able to support families who may be going through difficult times and feeling vulnerable.”

“The YPCS provides an intervention for children who may be struggling and by offering support the team can help change lives for the better, so we are glad that we are able to make a contribution.”

Building Futures is being delivered through the Persimmon Charitable Foundation and is aimed at community projects for people aged under 18, targeting grassroots sports groups, charities dealing with physical and mental health issues or awareness, as well as community arts and education projects.

Monthly grants of £1,000 will be awarded across Persimmon’s 32 regional businesses to improve facilities and the delivery of vital grassroots community projects.

In addition to the £1,000 monthly awards, three initiatives will go on to win £100,000 each through a national award scheme voted on by the public. The overall winners will be named at a gala dinner for finalists in October.

In each sector – sport, education & arts, and health – as well as the £100,000 first prize, there will be a £50,000 second prize and a £20,000 third prize, while a further 87 shortlisted projects will each receive £5,000.

Persimmon Homes is an official partner of Team GB as it prepares for Tokyo 2020 and beyond.
