Pupils from Locking Primary School have won Persimmon's gardening competition

04 December 2015

Keen young gardeners from Locking Primary School have scooped the gardening top prize in a competition designed to encourage children to create their own garden.

The children aged between 6 and 11 were awarded the accolade having lovingly cultivated, grown and designed a memorial garden in honour of a pupil who tragically died earlier this year.

Seven-year-old April Reeves was tragically killed in May when she was out cycling with her family next to the A371 and was involved in a collision with a car.

Joanne Jones, Headteacher for Locking Primary School, said: "April loved flowers, butterflies and everything pink. It therefore seemed fitting to create a garden combining all of these favourite things which could be used by all members of the school community.

We’re absolutely delighted to have won the Persimmon gardening competition and the cash prize will be put towards the cost of the project."

Nicola Reed, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, said: "The pupils designed a lovely memorial that serves as a fitting tribute to April. The garden created is absolutely magnificent providing a tranquil, yet vibrant area within the school grounds."

Persimmon’s ‘grow your own’ competition asked schools from across Weston-super-Mare to submit diary and pictorial evidence of the children growing plants and vegetables to demonstrate what has successfully been grown throughout the competition period. A cash prize of £500 was awarded to Locking Primary; who were deemed to have the most green-fingered pupils.
